I have information about Emil Weisentrope’s killer, but I can’t say it in front of Michelle. I think she’s involved!

Belmar looked at the message in disbelief. Now it was he who was speechless. How could this American lawyer have any information that could help his case? His first impression was that Headquarters had set him up with a wingnut just to mollify the American embassy. But what if this guy did know something? More important, what could it be? Belmar had to know, but first he had to come up with some unobtrusive way to get Michelle out of his office.

“Excuse me, Mr. Stilwell, why don’t you relax and have a seat for a moment. I want to see what happened to the drink you requested. I’ll be right back.”

Belmar had an idea. He wasn’t sure if it would work, but it was worth a try. He looked over at Michelle and saw her looking up at him.

“Please excuse me, Miss Siegel. I assure you I’ll be back in just a minute.” With that, Belmar walked out into the detectives’ pit, where neither Michelle nor Steve could see him.

Belmar’s departure raised Steve’s level of concern. He hoped he did the right thing by telling Belmar. His information was more than speculation; it was strong circumstantial evidence. He also hoped this wouldn’t delay his departure tomorrow, but he was preparing for the worst. This had been such a bizarre case from the very beginning. What started as his first will client now had him sitting in a German police station ready to pin a murder on his client’s daughter.

“What in the world is taking so long?” Michelle inquired, looking over her shoulder to see where Belmar had gone. Before Steve could answer, Belmar returned with Steve’s drink and Detective Schueller.

“Miss Siegel, Mr. Stilwell, please let me introduce Detective Hans Schueller.” After giving Steve his drink, Belmar stepped back so that the parties could shake hands.

“I believe we spoke when we walked in,” Michelle said as she and Steve took turns shaking Detective Schueller’s hand.

Belmar continued. “I can see this process is going to take a little longer than I originally thought, as I’ve got to get clearance to release the document you require. I wonder, then, Miss Siegel, if you would do us the honor of allowing Detective Schueller to show you around our station while I get Mr. Stilwell what he needs? It’s not every day we are visited by a beautiful American model, and we would love to show you around and get you a cup of good German coffee.”

“I’m very flattered, but I’m afraid I’m not a model and I really don’t mind waiting until you finish with Mr. Stilwell.”

“Please, Miss Siegel, everyone will enjoy meeting you,” Detective Schueller added in German.

“Why don’t you go, Miss Siegel?” Steve said, trying not to sound too much in favor of the idea. “I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’ll certainly be better than sitting around here while I wait for a copy of a death certificate.
